Unto this very spot did missionaries once tread. Welcome to Heritage Baptist Church in Accra. This unassuming building stands as a testament to a rich history. A history intertwined with the growth of Baptist faith in Ghana.
The Ghana Baptist Convention began its journey long ago. It started nearly a century past with connections to Nigeria’s Baptist Convention. Nigerian Baptist traders established early churches. These were in places like Kumasi Cape Coast and Sekondi. The Yoruba Baptist Association formed in 1935. They appealed for missionaries to spread the word among Ghanaians. Their services were in Yoruba a language many Ghanaians didn’t understand.
In 1947 the Nigeria Baptist Mission responded. Rev and Mrs H R Littleton arrived in Ghana. They began planting churches among the local population. The Yoruba Baptist Association transformed into the Gold Coast Baptist Conference. In 1952 the first indigenous Baptist Church opened its doors. This was in Boamang within the Ashanti Region.
Ghana’s independence in 1957 led to a name change. The denomination became the Ghana Baptist Conference. It remained under the Nigerian Baptist Convention’s guidance. Autonomy arrived in 1963. Then a year later it changed to the Ghana Baptist Convention. The Convention has been self-governing ever since.
The Ghana Baptist Convention partnered with many Baptist bodies and churches. These include American Baptist Churches International Ministries and others in the USA. It also collaborated with Baptist groups in the UK Denmark and beyond. This collaboration helped fulfil its vision within Ghana and far beyond.
The Convention faced challenges. It experienced a period of division in the 1980s. Some churches left due to disagreements with missionaries. However reconciliation occurred in 1992. The Convention has grown significantly. It now boasts thousands of churches and tens of thousands of members.
Heritage Baptist Church stands here a symbol of that growth. It represents the resilience and faith of the Ghanaian Baptist community. It also embodies the ongoing journey of spreading the Baptist message. The church’s existence speaks to the power of faith. It shows perseverance in the face of challenges. It stands as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Ghanaian Baptist Convention.
