Have you ever heard of a city nicknamed “The City Between the Ruhr Lakes”? Here in Herdecke, nestled south of Dortmund in Germany’s Ruhr Area, that nickname rings true. Herdecke sits beautifully between two stunning reservoirs, Hengsteysee and Harkortsee. These lakes, along with the forests of the Ardey heights, draw visitors to Herdecke’s unique charm. Herdecke isn’t just a pretty face though. This town boasts a history as rich as the forests surrounding it. The story of Herdecke begins in the 9th century with the founding of a women’s monastery. The Stiftskirche, the former monastery church, stands as a testament to this early history. Though rebuilt in the 13th century, parts of the original Carolingian structure still remain within its walls. Herdecke’s location has always been key to its development. Situated on well-traveled trade routes, Herdecke became a significant marketplace. In 1355, Count Engelbert III granted Herdecke market rights, solidifying its position as a regional hub for trade. This led to the development of a regionally important corn market, further enhancing Herdecke’s prosperity. Over the centuries, Herdecke continued to evolve. From the County of Mark to becoming a Freiheit in 1615, Herdecke’s story is one of resilience and growth. In 1739, Friedrich Wilhelm I bestowed city rights upon Herdecke. This marked a significant turning point. The town blossomed from a medieval market town into a thriving small city. Herdecke even played a role in World War II. The town served as godfather to the U-751 submarine, a vessel tragically lost in the Atlantic in 1942. Today, Herdecke offers a blend of history and modern amenities. The historic center, with its half-timbered houses and the impressive 30-meter-high railway viaduct, contrasts beautifully with the recreational opportunities afforded by the Ruhr lakes. Herdecke even boasts some world champion and Olympic winners, adding another layer of distinction to this dynamic town. As you stand here, in Herdecke, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history. From the whispers of the monastery’s past to the echoes of the industrial revolution, Herdecke has woven a compelling narrative. A narrative that continues to unfold as you explore its charming streets and picturesque landscapes.
