Established in 1956 the Herbert-Hoover-Schule stands before us. This integrated secondary school in Berlin’s Gesundbrunnen district has a rich history. It wasn’t always known by this name. The building itself is much older. A municipal Progymnasium was founded there in 1882. It later became the Lessing-Gymnasium in 1887. A real school branch was added in 1925. Amazingly the buildings survived World War II relatively unscathed except for the gymnasium. After the war the Lessing-Oberschule moved. The old building on Pankstrasse 18/19 was then home to a girls’ middle school. Later the first three classes of a real school moved in. On February 6 1956 this school was renamed the Herbert-Hoover-Oberschule. Herbert Hoover’s son was present at the ceremony. The school was later transformed into an integrated secondary school in 2010. Today the Herbert-Hoover-Schule boasts 469 students. A remarkable 89.1% are multilingual. It is consistently ranked among Berlin’s ten most sought-after secondary schools. In 2006 the Herbert-Hoover-Schule received a national prize. This was for a unique decision. Students teachers and parents agreed to only speak German on the school grounds. This decision while praised by many drew criticism from the Turkish community in Berlin. The Herbert-Hoover-Schule continues to be a vibrant hub of learning and cultural exchange in Berlin. It represents a blend of history innovation and a commitment to multilingualism. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of education. It stands as a symbol of integration and the ongoing evolution of the Berlin educational landscape. The Herbert-Hoover-Schule isn’t just a school. It’s a living piece of Berlin’s story.
