Established in 1970 Herbert H Lehman High School stands proudly in the Bronx. Its name honors former New York Governor Herbert Henry Lehman. The school’s first graduating class walked across the stage in June 1974. It’s not to be confused with Lehman College also named after the governor.

Early in its history Herbert H Lehman High School underwent a significant renovation. This included repainting the entire building. Much of the work happened at night to minimize classroom disruption. The school faced challenges. In 2007 Robert Leder the school’s principal for 37 years resigned. This followed an investigation into misuse of overtime funds. His departure prompted protests from students and parents.

Dr Janet Saraceno became the next principal. However she too left after allegations of grade tampering. She was succeeded by Rose Lobianco. Ms Lobianco later became principal of Bronx Leadership Academy II. John Powers took the reins next. His eight-year tenure brought significant improvements. He oversaw a school rebranding and the creation of a new state-of-the-art library. He also helped establish college courses through SUNY Albany. Under his leadership graduation rates soared from 40% to 82%. Enrollment also increased substantially. In 2023 the school was removed from state receivership. Mr Powers then retired.

Herbert H Lehman High School boasts a vibrant athletic program. Its mascot is a lion and its colors are blue and orange. The school’s football team has achieved notable success. Former coach Carmine Colasanto a highly respected figure in the PSAL amassed over 200 victories. He was succeeded by Deborah Vance the only female head football coach in the PSAL. The school’s soccer team is also a powerhouse. They won their first New York City Championship in 2001. They consistently rank among the top teams in the Bronx.

Today Herbert H Lehman High School continues its legacy. It houses several other schools under its roof. This includes Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology. The school has numerous notable alumni. These include baseball stars Bobby Bonilla and T J Rivera. Rapper Cardi B and Congressman Ritchie Torres also graduated from Lehman High School.
