“Goddess” is the nickname given to this memorial. The Hera Sculpture stands tall, a testament to Lille’s resilience. This commemorates the Siege of 1792. It is a major event in the city’s history. However, it had relatively low military significance on a wider scale.

Let me tell you the story behind this iconic monument.

In September 1792, Lille faced an Austrian army of 20,000 men. Albert Casimir, Duke of Teschen, led the attack. For nine days and nights, the Austrians bombarded Lille relentlessly. The citizens resisted fiercely, led by Mayor François André. The Austrians ultimately had to raise the siege.

The Austrian bombardment destroyed many houses. The main church, Saint-Etienne, was also destroyed. This church stood on the Grand’ Place. Today, it is the Place du Général de Gaulle. The church was never rebuilt. Lille’s Grand’ Place remains one of the few central places without a church or belfry. Similar cities, like Bruges and Brussels, have both.

Hyacinthe Jadin composed his Marche du siège de Lille in 1792. This was in direct response to the siege. Yet, for many years, Lille had no physical monument to mark the event. About fifty years later, local authorities realized this oversight. They decided to build a memorial. The first stone was laid in September 1842. The memorial was finished in 1845.

Charles Benvignat designed the column. Théophile Bra sculpted the statue. The statue represents the besieged city. She wears a mural crown. Locals soon nicknamed it “The Goddess”. Local poems suggest this nickname quickly gained popularity.

Since around 1990, a fountain has surrounded the Hera Sculpture.

Consider the Hera Sculpture’s enduring presence. It embodies Lille’s spirit. It stands as a reminder of the city’s strength. It is a symbol of its people’s courage. The Hera Sculpture is more than just a monument. It is a living testament to Lille’s past. It shows its unwavering resolve. It echoes through generations.
