Question: Did you know that Heonilleung houses kings born 400 years apart? This royal tomb site offers a glimpse into Korea’s regal past. We are now standing at Heonilleung in Seoul. It is more than just a burial ground. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Heonilleung embodies Korean history and natural beauty.

Heonilleung is located in the Seocho District. It marks the final resting place for two Joseon Dynasty kings and their queens. The site’s name combines Heolleung and Illeung. Heolleung is the tomb of King Taejong who reigned from 1367 to 1422 and his wife Queen Wongyeong who lived from 1365 to 1420. Illeung is the tomb of King Sunjo who reigned from 1790 to 1834 and his wife Queen Sunwon who lived from 1789 to 1857.

Heolleung features twin mounds connected by railings. King Taejong rests in the left mound. Queen Wongyeong rests in the right one. Illeung has only one mound. Both King Sunjo and Queen Sunwon are entombed there. King Sunjo was initially buried in Jangneung in Paju. Geomancy beliefs led to his tomb’s relocation to this auspicious site in 1856.

Imagine the Joseon Dynasty. It ruled Korea for over five centuries. Heonilleung showcases traditional Korean burial practices. It reflects the deep respect Koreans have for their ancestors. The tombs are surrounded by meticulously kept gardens and wooded areas. These serene surroundings offer an escape from city life.

Take a stroll along the picturesque pathways. Admire the traditional architecture. Observe the ornate stone sculptures guarding the tombs. Spring and autumn offer enchanting views. The foliage bursts into vibrant colors. This creates perfect photo opportunities.

Getting here is easy. You can take Subway Line 3 to Yangjae Station. From there, buses 440, 741, or 452 will bring you to the Heonilleung Gangnam Seocho Science Reserve Training Center stop. A short walk will lead you to the tombs.

Remember King Taejong? Some Koreans see him as ruthless. Yet he was an effective leader. He was also the father of King Sejong, inventor of the Korean alphabet.

Heonilleung is more than just a historical site. It is a place for reflection. It is a testament to Korea’s enduring royal legacy. As you leave, carry with you a sense of Korea’s regal past. Remember the stories whispered by these ancient grounds. They connect us to a rich heritage.
