Could you imagine a grand estate rising from the lands south of Walden Pond? That vision materialized as the Henry Higginson House. This historic house stands at 44 Baker Farm Road in Lincoln Massachusetts.
The Henry Higginson House is a testament to Tudor Revival architecture. Julian Ingersoll Chamberlain designed this three-story mansion. It was built between 1905 and 1906 for Alexander Henry Higginson. His father Henry Lee Higginson funded the construction of the Henry Higginson House.
The land where the Henry Higginson House was erected held historical significance. Henry David Thoreau described it as part of Jacob Baker’s farm. This area contributes to the unique character of the estate. Alexander Henry Higginson lived here until 1933. After remaining in private hands the Walden Woods Project acquired the Henry Higginson House in 1992. This acquisition ensured the preservation of the surrounding Walden Woods area.
Henry Lee Higginson the father of Alexander Henry Higginson, left a significant mark on Boston and Harvard. He founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Higginson also donated Soldiers Field to Harvard for athletics. This donation marked an important step into Allston.
Furthermore Henry Lee Higginson organized the purchase of the downtown site for the Medical School. His contributions extended to fostering community and education. In 1899, Higginson donated money for the construction of the Harvard Union. This center aimed to welcome all during a time of socioeconomic divisions. The Union later became the first-year students’ dining hall and is now the Barker Center.
Henry Lee Higginson also inadvertently influenced the creation of state-issued license plates. Annoyed by speeding traffic near his summer home he petitioned for a tracking system for reckless drivers.
Massachusetts became the first state to issue license plates because of Henry Lee Higginson’s advocacy. His nephew Frederick Tudor received Massachusetts plate number 1. The Henry Higginson House’s rich history connects to significant figures and events.
The house earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places on May 26 2005. This recognition underscores its historical and architectural importance. Today the Henry Higginson House stands as a reminder of a bygone era. It is a place where history architecture and nature converge. The Thoreau Society library is housed here. Preserving the legacy of Henry Lee Higginson and his family continues to inspire.
