On a crisp Berlin day in 1958, a rider met an untimely end. This tragic event is commemorated by the Henry Greiser Stele. The Henry Greiser Stele stands as a somber reminder of a life lost in the line of duty. Henry Greiser was a Polizeihauptwachtmeister, a police sergeant, in the mounted police of Berlin. The stele is located in Grunewald, north of Schlachtensee, on Jagen 47. It’s a dark granite plaque, set into a pyramidal stone base. The inscription tells the story: “In faithful fulfillment of duty, Police Sergeant Henry Greiser met his death here on March 18, 1958, by falling from his horse. The Police President. Mounted Police Berlin.” Greiser, only 30 years old, was on patrol when his horse startled. He was thrown against a tree, a fatal accident that left behind a grieving wife.
