The story begins in 1869, when German immigrant Trupert Ortlieb, a veteran of the Civil War, established a brewery in Philadelphia. The brewery, later named after his son Henry F. Ortlieb, thrived, especially after Prohibition. By 1948, the company was ready for a state-of-the-art bottling facility. This building, the Henry F. Ortlieb Company Bottling House, was their answer. Designed by Richard Koelle, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, it reflected the post-war industrial chic with its blend of International Style and Philadelphia’s signature brick. The bottling house was a marvel of its time, featuring cutting-edge technology that allowed it to bottle a million bottles a day.
