Henry Dyer was a Scottish engineer born in 1848. He significantly impacted the industrialization of Japan. Dyer founded the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo. Later it became part of the University of Tokyo.
Around 1865, the Dyer family moved to Glasgow. Henry Dyer became an apprentice engineer. He attended classes at Anderson’s College. It later became the University of Strathclyde.
Dyer studied engineering at Glasgow University. He graduated in 1873. He earned a certificate in engineering. Dyer was the first Scot to win the Whitworth scholarship in 1868.
In 1872, the Meiji government sought teaching staff for a new engineering school. They wanted to modernize Japan rapidly. William Rankine arranged for Dyer to lead the team. Dyer became Principal and Professor of Engineering.
Dyer designed a six-year curriculum. It included basic, professional, and practical courses. He adapted the Royal Indian Engineering College curriculum to Japan’s needs. To provide practical training, Dyer helped set up the Akabane Engineering Works. Many of his former students carried out major engineering works in Japan.
In 1882, Dyer left the Imperial College of Engineering. Emperor Meiji awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun. It was the highest Japanese honor for foreigners. He had established a progressive engineering education system in Tokyo. Dyer greatly contributed to Japan’s progress as an industrial power.
Returning from Japan, Henry Dyer brought back artifacts. His descendants donated some to the Mitchell Library and Edinburgh Central Library. These included scrolls, woodblock prints, and photographs.
Back in Scotland, Dyer became a life governor of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College in 1886. He became a member of the Glasgow School Board in 1891. He was its president from 1914 until his death.
Dyer represented a pro-Japanese lobby in Scotland. He assisted Japanese students and engineers. Glasgow University allowed Japanese as a language for entry in 1901.
