Right here in Ixelles where he lived for many years. Henri Logelain wasn’t just any painter. He was a draftsman a watercolourist an engraver and even a teacher.

His artistic journey began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He continued his studies in Rome at the Academia Belgica. He later taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leuven and the School of Decorative Arts in Vilvoorde. Imagine the countless students he inspired! He was a member of several prestigious artistic societies. The ‘Effort’ workshop the Royal Belgian Society of Watercolourists and the Belgian Society of Painters of the Sea. His talent was widely recognized. He exhibited his work from 1911 onwards. He even had a room dedicated to him at the Venice Biennale in both 1934 and 1938. His work was also showcased at the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958.

Logelain’s artistic style was diverse. Primarily a realistic and neo-impressionist painter. He also experienced a Fauvist period around 1910. His favourite subjects were landscapes still lifes seascapes urban views and portraits. He wasn’t afraid to experiment with different mediums. A true master of his craft. He travelled to the Belgian Congo in 1938 creating numerous portraits of Congolese people.

Many of his works are held in prestigious collections. You can find them in museums across Belgium. In Brussels Ghent Ixelles Charleroi Kortrijk Namur and Ostend. The Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium also holds some of his pieces. A testament to his enduring legacy. His impact extends beyond his paintings. A monument with a medallion bearing his likeness created by René Cliquet stands in the gardens of the Abbey of La Cambre in Ixelles. This plaque serves as a more intimate tribute a marker in the neighborhood where he spent his life. It reminds us of the artist’s connection to this very spot.
