A fusion of two towns. That’s the story of Hénin-Beaumont. Hénin-Liétard and Beaumont-en-Artois united in 1971. This wasn’t a simple merger. It was a joining of histories. A blend of destinies. Both towns were deeply rooted in the coal mining industry. This industry shaped their lives. It shaped their landscapes.

Before the mines transformed the area Hénin-Beaumont held an ancient history. A prosperous Gaulish village existed long before. Evidence from excavations shows this. Numerous coins were discovered near the marshes. These artifacts suggest Celtic and Germano-Belgian populations once lived here. In 360 an early church was built. This marked the beginning of Christianity’s influence. The area became definitively Christian in the 7th century.

The medieval period saw the founding of the Augustinian abbey of Hénin. Later it was renamed Notre-Dame d’Hénin-Liétard. Saint Aubert is credited with founding it. Vikings tragically burned Hennium in a raid sometime in the Middle Ages. The town. Then ruled by the seigneury of the counts of Liétard. Suffered further devastation in 1053. Imperial troops pillaged and burned it. Isaac Liétard the fourth seigneur of Hénin built new fortifications. These stood for three centuries. The abbey was rebuilt in 1169. Its new church was constructed in 1187. In 1244 Baudouin I of Alsace sold the town to Robert I count of Artois.

The 17th century brought a new chapter. Hénin-Liétard was raised to the rank of county. This was a significant honor. Oudard de Bournonville received the title. He was a prominent figure. A knight. Baron of Barlin and Houllefort. He was also the king’s governor and captain of Arras. The discovery of coal in 1852 dramatically changed the region. It began a period of rapid industrialization. From 1856 many foreigners arrived in Hénin-Liétard to work in the mines. The Nord railway company built the Hénin-Liétard train station in 1859.

World War I brought devastation. German occupation was harsh and destructive. The Germans destroyed the town hall. Allied bombardment further damaged it. They even blew up the Saint-Martin church. The church was rebuilt in a Greco-Byzantine style. This reflects the town’s efforts to rebuild after the war.

The 20th and 21st centuries have witnessed political shifts. The rise of the National Front. The closure of mines caused economic hardships. High unemployment. Social challenges remain. The town however perseveres. It continues to adapt. Hénin-Beaumont’s story is one of resilience. A testament to the enduring spirit of its people. It’s a story worth exploring. A story of struggle. And triumph.
