Can you imagine a tennis center built in just one year? Here at the Hengqin International Tennis Center, that’s precisely what happened. This impressive sporting venue, nestled in the heart of Hengqin, Zhuhai, opened its doors in September 2015. The Hengqin International Tennis Center isn’t just any tennis center. It boasts a unique design by Populous, the architectural masterminds behind iconic venues like Wimbledon Centre Court and the Margaret Court Arena. This place covers a sprawling 117,000 square meters. The initial phase completed in 2015, covers 68,000 square meters and features a 5,000-seat center court. Imagine the roar of the crowd during a thrilling match! There’s also a 1,500-seat court, four smaller match courts, and twelve practice courts. The Hengqin International Tennis Center is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of cooperation between Zhuhai, Macau, and Hong Kong. It serves as a testament to China’s “one country, two systems” policy. Hengqin and Macau are practically neighbors, separated by a mere 200 meters and connected by a bridge. The Hengqin International Tennis Center is home to several prestigious tournaments. These include the WTA Elite Trophy, the Zhuhai Open, and the Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff for the Australian Open. In a heartwarming gesture of community spirit, the center opened its training facilities free of charge to residents of Zhuhai, Macau, and Hong Kong from August to December 2018. The innovative design of the center court is particularly noteworthy. It features two roofs: a cantilevered outer roof shielding the stands and a central roof covering the court itself. This clever design lets in natural light and ventilation. At the same time, it protects players and spectators from harsh sunlight and rain. When not hosting thrilling tennis matches, the landscaped grounds are open to the public as a park. The Hengqin International Tennis Center is a remarkable blend of sporting excellence, architectural ingenuity, and community spirit.
