What if boathouses could talk? The Henderson Boathouse would boast of Northeastern University’s rowing triumphs. It would tell tales of teamwork and Charles River challenges. We’re standing before the Henderson Boathouse. It is home to Northeastern University’s men’s and women’s rowing teams.
The Henderson Boathouse sits on the Allston-Brighton shore. It overlooks the historic Mt. Auburn Cemetery. This location provides a blend of athletic pursuit and serene reflection. The Henderson Boathouse has been Northeastern Rowing’s home since 1990.
Before the Henderson Boathouse, the Huskies used part of Riverside Boat Club for 25 years. Imagine the team’s excitement moving into this modern facility.
The Henderson Boathouse is named for Mary Louise and Ernest Flagg Henderson. They were generous benefactors of Northeastern University. Ernie Henderson was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees.
Renowned architect Graham Gund designed the Henderson Boathouse. He preserved the Victorian feel of the riverscape. He also integrated modern technology. The boathouse features towers and sloped roofs. Dormers and porches add to its charm. Inside, there is an exercise area. It boasts a 40-foot high cathedral ceiling.
Inside the Henderson Boathouse, you’ll find four large boat bays. A fully equipped workshop supports repairs and maintenance. The second floor houses coaches’ offices. There are spacious locker rooms for both teams. The Jack & Kathy Grinold Training Center provides a large central workout area. Photos of former Huskies adorn the walls. Trophies and awards showcase the program’s history.
The Charles River’s history is intertwined with rowing. The Massachusett Indian tribe used it for fishing. In 1775, Paul Revere rowed across the Charles to warn of the British. Collegiate competition began in 1852. Northeastern joined the Charles River navy in 1965.
Today, the Charles River hosts 22 college crews. On a spring Saturday, there could be 50 races. The Head of the Charles Regatta is a world-famous fall event.
To watch Northeastern races, you can go to the finish line. It’s near the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Memorial Drive. The MIT Boathouse offers a view as boats pass under the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge. Spectators can also stand on the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge.
To reach the Henderson Boathouse, take Soldiers Field Road in Allston. It’s across from WBZ and the Days Inn Hotel. Parking is available in the public lot across from the Days Inn.
