Can you imagine a place that embodies the spirit of sacrifice and remembrance? Here, at the Hemicycle at Houston National Cemetery, we stand before a monument that honors the lives of those who served our nation. This large, semicircular structure is the largest memorial in the cemetery and a testament to the profound impact of military service. The Hemicycle is unique in its design. It is the only one managed by the National Cemetery Administration and is one of just three hemicycles in national cemeteries in the world. Stand here and witness the solemn beauty of the Hemicycle. It surrounds a chapel, a carillon, and a speaker’s stand, all positioned at the center of the semi-circle. Every detail of this memorial speaks to a poignant story. David Parsons, an art professor at Rice University, crafted a striking bas-relief sculpture that depicts a fallen soldier supported by two comrades. Made of crushed quartz and installed in 1965, the sculpture graces the chapel entrance. Ascending above it all is a 75-foot tower that houses the Schulmerich Americana carillon. It stands as a lasting reminder of the lives that have been lost and the service of the fallen.
