A tribute to a forgotten genius. That’s what this monument is. The Helstone Monument stands before you. It’s a quiet testament to Johannes Helstone. He was a remarkable Surinamese composer and pianist.

This unassuming monument holds a rich story. It wasn’t always here. Johannes Helstone died in 1927. He left behind a legacy of music and writing. Yet for years his contributions remained largely unacknowledged. It wasn’t until 1948 that this monument was erected. This was a long overdue recognition. The monument’s location is significant. It sits on the north side of the Centrumkerk. This is where Helstone served as organist for many years.

His musical talent blossomed early. At just 14 years old he went to Paramaribo for a teaching degree. His skills impressed his teacher Heinrich Williger. Williger helped Helstone continue his studies. He went to the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig. He graduated cum laude in 1894. He could have stayed in Europe. Many opportunities opened up to him. He chose to return to Suriname. This shows his dedication to his homeland.

Helstone’s most famous work is the opera Het Pand der Goden. It premiered in 1906 to positive reviews. He even took the opera to Germany France and Austria. He received several job offers but declined. He preferred to remain in Suriname. He also composed psalms a mazurka brillante and the Prinses Juliana Mars. He even wrote a book on the grammar of Sranan Tongo. This shows his versatility. It also highlights his contributions to Surinamese culture. Tragically a fire destroyed many of his early compositions. Two pianos were also lost.

Today the Helstone Monument is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of perseverance. It represents the triumph of talent over adversity. It also serves as a reminder. We must recognize the contributions of our cultural heroes. Take a moment to reflect on Helstone’s life. Consider his immense impact on Surinamese music and culture. His legacy continues to resonate. He showed dedication to his country. He achieved international recognition yet he chose to return. This shows his strong sense of home and community. Let us honor his memory.
