Who scored the first goal in the 1966 World Cup final against England? Right in front of you stands the Helmut-Haller-Denkmal. It commemorates the man who did just that: Helmut Haller. The Helmut-Haller-Denkmal, a bronze statue, was unveiled on August 1st, 2015. It was a gift from the “FCA Family,” a testament to Haller’s impact on the FC Augsburg. The inscription reads: “In memory of Helmut Haller, the greatest son of our city, donated by the FCA family.” Haller, born in Augsburg’s Oberhausen district in 1939, began his career with BC Augsburg. His childhood nickname, “Hemad” (shirt in Swabian), reflected his slender build. He later earned the moniker “Il Biondo” (the blond one) in Italy. Haller’s talent propelled him to international fame, representing Germany in three World Cups. His goal at Wembley in ’66 remains a highlight, though Germany ultimately lost. He was the second-highest scorer in that tournament. Haller’s journey took him to Italy, where he won championships with Bologna and Juventus. He even played in the European Cup final in 1973. Despite his international success, Haller returned to Augsburg in 1973. He joined the newly formed FC Augsburg. His return sparked “Hallerluja” chants in the Rosenaustadion. He led the team to the Regionalliga Süd title. Haller played his last game for FCA in 1979. He later served as the club’s vice president. He dedicated himself to the Sepp-Herberger-Stiftung. This Augsburg hero, despite his fame, remained grounded. He passed away in 2012. The Helmut-Haller-Denkmal serves as a reminder of his remarkable journey. It’s a symbol of local pride and international achievement.
