What secrets do the towering Helligdomsklipperne hold? These Sanctuary Rocks, rising dramatically 22 meters above the Baltic Sea, whisper tales of ancient pilgrims and holy springs. Helligdomsklipperne, a group of rocks just 6 kilometers from Gudhjem, are more than just a stunning natural formation. Their name echoes a time when a holy spring at their base drew those seeking healing, especially on Midsummer’s Night. Imagine the scene in the Middle Ages, with pilgrims gathering near the spring and carrying its waters up to Trefoldighedskapellet, the Trinity Chapel, which once stood watch above. While the chapel is gone, the rocks remain, etched with time and tide. The ice age played a part in their formation, submerging them completely before the island of Bornholm rose, leaving them exposed to the elements. Wind and waves carved the granite into fantastic shapes, creating deep ovens like Sorte Gryde (Black Pot), Våde Ovn (Wet Oven), and Tørre Ovn (Dry Oven). These caverns plunge deep into the rock, Sorte Gryde reaching an impressive 60 meters. Notice the unique flora clinging to life on these cliffs. Rowan trees, including the rare Finnish whitebeam and Swedish whitebeam, thrive here. Atop the cliffs, heather, large pinks, oak, birch, and juniper paint a colorful tapestry. Helligdomsklipperne has always drawn people. In the early 20th century, increasing tourism prompted the founding of Foreningen Bornholm (The Bornholm Association) to ensure public access. Today, boats from Gudhjem harbor offer breathtaking views of the rocks from the sea. As you stand here, before these magnificent cliffs, the whispers of pilgrims and the echoes of the past mingle with the crashing waves. Helligdomsklipperne, a true sanctuary of nature and history.
