Could a sprawling airport become a green oasis? Here at the Hellenikon Metropolitan Park, that dream is taking root. This park, rising from the remnants of the Hellenikon International Airport, is set to become one of Europe’s largest urban parks. The ambitious project, first envisioned around 2005, hit some turbulence during the financial crisis. However, work took off again in July 2020, with the first phase aiming for completion by early 2026. The Hellenikon Metropolitan Park isn’t just about green space. It’s planned to encompass 263 hectares. Over 100 additional hectares are dedicated to housing and office facilities. Imagine luxurious homes, hotels, even a casino and a marina woven into this urban tapestry. The park’s design itself is a story. An international team, led by architects David Serero and Elena Fernandez, and landscape architect Philippe Coignet, won the design competition. Their concept cleverly uses the site’s natural water flow to create a sustainable haven. Seven green valleys, or “Softscapes,” will channel and collect rainwater, creating a dynamic landscape. The Hellenikon Metropolitan Park even has plans for its aviation past. Several old Olympic Airways planes, including a Boeing 747 and a Boeing 727, will be preserved and displayed within the park. This isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to urban transformation. It’s the Hellenikon Metropolitan Park, a vibrant blend of nature and human ingenuity.
