Founded in 1986, the Hellenic Air Force Museum opened its doors in 1992. It is located at the Dekelia Air Base in Acharnes, north of Athens. This museum isn’t just about displaying old planes. It actively restores and preserves them.
The Hellenic Air Force Museum stands in contrast to the War Museum of Athens. The Hellenic Air Force Museum focuses specifically on air force history. Most of the aircraft on display once belonged to the Hellenic Air Force. Some were acquired through exchanges with other European aircraft museums.
One remarkable aspect of the Hellenic Air Force Museum is the recovery of rare aircraft from underwater. The HAF Underwater Operations Team, known as KOSYTHE, played a crucial role in these missions. They salvaged a Bristol Blenheim, a Junkers Ju 52/3m, and a Junkers Ju 87 Stuka. Imagine the challenges of bringing these historical planes back to the surface.
The Hellenic Air Force Museum boasts an impressive collection of aircraft. You can see an Agusta-Bell 47J-2 Ranger and an Agusta-Bell 206A Jet Ranger II. Also on display is a Bell OH-13 Sioux helicopter. Several Canadair CL-13 Sabre Mk.2s are present.
The Hellenic Air Force Museum also features Cessna T-37B and T-37C Tweets. A Convair TF-102A Delta Dagger is there. Don’t miss the Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver and the Dassault Mirage F1CG. A De Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth is also part of the collection.
Other notable aircraft at the Hellenic Air Force Museum include a Douglas C-47B Dakota and Dornier Do-28D-2 Skyservants. A Grumman G-159 Gulfstream I and Grumman HU-16B Albatrosses are also present. Several Lockheed F-104G Starfighters are on display along with a Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter. You can also find Lockheed T-33As at the Hellenic Air Force Museum.
The museum also features LTV A-7E and A-7H Corsair IIs and a McDonnell Douglas RF-4E Phantom II. There is also a Mignet HM.14. A Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter and a Northrop RF-5A Tigereye are present. A Nord N.2501 Noratlas can be viewed. The Hellenic Air Force Museum also exhibits a North American F-86D Sabre and a North American T-6G Texan.
Completing the collection are a Republic F-84F Thunderstreak, a Republic F-84G Thunderjet, and a Republic RF-84F Thunderflash. A Sikorsky UH-19B Chickasaw, a Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXc, and a WSK-1 Mielec Lim-2Rbis are also on display at the Hellenic Air Force Museum. Some unrestored aircraft offer a glimpse into the restoration process.
