Here stands a monument to one of the greatest discoveries in biology the Helix Sculpture. This striking sculpture represents the double helix structure of DNA. It commemorates the groundbreaking work of James Watson and Francis Crick.

In 1953 Watson and Crick unlocked the very key to life while Watson lived here at Clare College. Their discovery revolutionized our understanding of genetics. They shared the Nobel Prize with Maurice Wilkins. The Helix Sculpture stands as a testament to their genius.

The Helix Sculpture was donated to Clare College by James Watson himself. Watson was a graduate student at Clare College when he made this incredible breakthrough. He later became an Honorary Fellow of the college in 1967. The Master of Clare College, Tony Badger, expressed great pride in hosting this lasting reminder of Watson’s achievements.

Designed by landscape designer and artist Charles Jencks, the sculpture is made of aluminium. Jencks was a man of many talents. He lectured, wrote and built in both the USA and the UK.

You will find inscriptions at the base of the Helix Sculpture. They honor the crucial contributions of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. The inscriptions explain that DNA has two helical strands linked by base pairs. Adenine pairs with thymine and guanine pairs with cytosine. These strands unravel during cell reproduction, a process vital to life. Genes are encoded in the sequence of these bases.

The sculpture serves as a visual representation of the very blueprint of life. It connects science, art and the pursuit of knowledge. Take a moment to consider the sheer complexity and beauty of DNA. The Helix Sculpture stands as a proud symbol of Cambridge’s contribution to scientific progress. It inspires future generations of scientists and thinkers. This sculpture embodies the spirit of discovery that thrives within these hallowed halls.
