Opened in 1951 Helix High School initially shared space with Grossmont High School. Imagine the bustle two schools crammed into one building. Helix High School’s first year was a whirlwind of double sessions. Students attended classes in the afternoon. Grossmont High School students occupied the mornings. This was Helix High School’s humble start. The school was built to relieve the overwhelming student population at Grossmont. East County voters approved a $1.9 million bond for construction.

Helix High School quickly became overcrowded itself. Rapid population growth in La Mesa forced the district’s hand. El Cajon Valley High School opened just four years later. It aimed to alleviate the pressure on Helix High School. The school was not just a building. It became a community hub. It served La Mesa Lemon Grove and Spring Valley. As a charter school its doors were open to all California high school students.

Helix High School underwent extensive renovations. Voters approved Propositions H and U in 2004 and 2008. The renovations included a new administration building a science building and a performing arts center. All standard classrooms received upgrades. The projects transformed the campus. Buildings 10 100 200 300 400 500 600 700 1100 1140 1200 1800 and 900 were remodeled. Building 800 was demolished. A new administration building rose in its place. The landscaping also received a major overhaul.

Helix High School boasts a rich history of traditions. Its bagpipe band marches students onto the football field. The band performs at various events. The Highlander Band accompanies them in parades and games. They also compete in Scottish Highland Games. This bagpipe band is part of the fabric of Helix High School.

The Battle for the Musket is another significant tradition. This yearly football game pits Helix High School against Grossmont High School. The winner claims the musket a trophy representing their victory. The rivalry is fierce. The game is one of the most attended of the season. It’s a highlight for the community.

Helix High School has produced notable alumni. These alumni represent various fields. They include athletes like Reggie Bush and Bill Walton. There are also artists such as Lalo Alcaraz and Dennis Hopper. This diverse group demonstrates the school’s wide-ranging impact.
