Built in 1933 the Heliandkirche stands as a testament to faith. This church on Westfalendamm was the Reinoldigemeinde’s last large building project. It’s more than just a place of worship. The Heliandkirche houses a community hall and other rooms in its basement. Architect Ludwig Franzius cleverly designed a low south wing. This wing houses the caretaker’s apartment and sacristy. The wing makes the 2675 meter high church tower appear even taller. The Heliandkirche is a landmark on the busy Bundesstraße 1.

The church survived World War II. It was reopened in 1948. Initially the altar and statues of Saint Reinoldus and Charlemagne were inside. These were from the destroyed St Reinoldi Church. They returned to St Reinoldi in 1954. In 1961 a new altar window was installed. Erhart Mitzaff of Bremen created it. Its motifs are from the Book of Revelation specifically the Heavenly Jerusalem.

In recent years the Heliandkirche and its community rooms have undergone extensive renovations. New stained glass windows were installed. A new bell tower was also added. Three bronze bells hang in the tower. One is from 1932 the others from 1962. Next to the Heliandkirche is a parsonage. It is currently rented out by the church district. A kindergarten is also part of the building complex.

The name Heliand comes from an Old Saxon harmony of the Gospels. It dates back to the ninth century. It tells the story of Jesus’ life. The unknown author portrays Christ as a duke with followers in the Saxon homeland. The language and verse form reflect the ninth century. The Heliandkirche stands as a beacon of history faith and community. It is a powerful symbol of Dortmund’s resilience and spiritual life. This enduring structure continues to serve its community. It’s a reminder of the past and a promise for the future.
