Founded in 1874 the Helene-Lange-Schule stands before us. A testament to Frankfurt’s rich educational history. Initially a private higher daughter school this institution was a bold initiative. Karl Königs a director at Farbwerke Meister Lucius & Brüning spearheaded its creation. The school aimed to provide advanced education for girls. This was unusual for that time.

In 1896 the Helene-Lange-Schule transitioned from private to municipal control. This signified a crucial step towards greater accessibility. After World War II the school took on the name of Helene Lange. This was in honor of the prominent women’s rights activist. Until 1975 it remained an all-girls school. Reflecting societal shifts the school became co-educational.

The Helene-Lange-Schule’s journey wasn’t confined to a single location. Early classes were held in the Bolongaropalast’s eastern pavilion. After several moves the school found its current home. The building sits at the edge of Höchst city park. It was established in 1965.

As part of a major educational reform project the school embraced change. In 1970 it became a pilot school. The Oberstufenreform aimed to modernize secondary education. This led to a notable merger in 1975. The Helene-Lange-Schule joined forces with the Leibniz School. A new upper school the Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasium was also included.

This collaboration shaped a unique educational network. Teachers share their expertise across schools. Students typically transfer to the Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasium after the 10th grade. They complete their Abitur there. The Helene-Lange-Schule offers French as a first foreign language. It also has a remarkable feature an observatory on the roof. Students can use a telescope. The school maintains partnerships including one with the Lycée Maurice-Ravel in Paris.

The Helene-Lange-Schule has nurtured many notable individuals. Amalie Froehlich a member of the first Prussian state parliament was a former teacher. So was Hans-Ludwig Neumann a prominent physicist and president of the Physikalischer Verein. The school’s enduring legacy reflects its commitment to education and progress. It also reflects the evolving educational landscape of Frankfurt. This institution’s story is a reminder of the transformative power of education.
