The imposing structure before you is Heizkraftwerk Reuter. It’s more than just a power plant. It’s a silent witness to Berlin’s turbulent history.
Heizkraftwerk Reuter began its life in 1931. It was then known as Kraftwerk West. Its purpose was simple: power the western part of Berlin. This was part of a larger plan to ensure Berlin’s electrical supply. Kraftwerk Klingenberg was designed to power the east. Kraftwerk West was its counterpart.
The initial design was ambitious. Two phases of construction were planned. The finished plant was intended to generate 228 MW. Siemens-Schuckertwerke built it. The architecture followed the Neue Sachlichkeit style. Two impressive 110-meter-tall chimneys dominated the skyline. They were perched atop the 46-meter-high boiler house.
World War II changed everything. Expansion plans were underway to meet the increased demands of the war effort. The plant reached about 70 percent completion before the war’s end. Soviet troops occupied the largely undamaged facility in April 1945. They began dismantling vital components. The Allies took control in July 1945. They managed to save some equipment. But restarting operations proved impossible.
The Berlin Blockade created an even greater challenge. The Soviets blockaded West Berlin. This included cutting off power supplies. The West needed a reliable power source. The solution was the Berlin Airlift. In 580 flights 1416 tonnes of equipment were flown in. This included essential machinery and building materials. The Airlift underscored the futility of the Soviet blockade which ended in May 1949.
Kraftwerk West was brought back to life on December 1 1949. Ernst Reuter the then mayor of Berlin oversaw the reopening. The plant’s name was later changed to Heizkraftwerk Reuter in his honor. It continually expanded its capacity. By 1956 it generated 326 MW.
The 1960s saw further expansion. Block C added 132 MW of electrical power and 169 MW of heat. This heat was fed into the district heating network. This made Heizkraftwerk Reuter a combined heat and power plant. It produced around half of West Berlin’s electricity.
Upgrades continued throughout the following decades. Environmental concerns led to the addition of desulfurization plants and an electrostatic filter. The plant’s appearance changed. Old chimneys were removed. New ones were added.
However even the most robust facilities have a lifespan. Block C the final active unit was decommissioned in October 2019. A new Power-to-Heat plant has taken its place. This facility uses excess renewable energy to generate heat. Heizkraftwerk Reuter stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience. Its history mirrors the city’s own journey from destruction to rebirth.
