Heinrich Gerber, born in Bavaria in 1832, revolutionized bridge design with his ingenious invention: the Gerber girder. This innovative system, incorporating cantilevers and hinges, allowed for the construction of bridges with significantly longer spans than ever before. Imagine the challenge of bridging vast rivers or deep gorges before Gerber’s time. His invention, however, opened up a world of possibilities. The first bridge to showcase his genius was built right here in Bamberg, spanning the Regnitz River in 1867.
