Remember Heinersdorf’s name as we start this exploration. This locality in Berlin whispers stories from centuries past. Heinersdorf offers a unique glimpse into Berlin’s evolving identity.

Heinersdorf was first documented in 1319. Margrave Waldemar of Brandenburg sold it to the Hospital of the Holy Ghost in Berlin. This hospital was Berlin’s oldest foundation. Bakers initiated it in 1272. The Schneiderhandwerk later joined in 1288. The hospital owned Heinersdorf until 1539.

Heinersdorf’s ownership changed hands many times thereafter. In 1691 the von Fuchs family briefly owned the village. The Heiliggeist Hospital retained property rights. They sold these rights to the Kurmarkische Chamber of Office for 3950 Thalers in 1718. Heinersdorf then fell under the administrative control of Niederschönhausen. Later it was managed by the Mühlenhof office until 1812.

Around 1300 the fieldstone church foundations were laid. This church stands as a testament to Heinersdorf’s long history. The Dorfkirche Heinersdorf features stained glass windows from 1946. Charles Crodel created them. The Dorfkirche Heinersdorf also has a Renaissance baptismal font from 1621.

Heinersdorf has an old fire station dating back to around 1750. This is near the old churchyard. The former community hall with its gateway is also worth a look. It was built around 1915.

A significant landmark in Heinersdorf is its water tower. Erected in 1910 the Heinersdorf water tower was intended for a town hall. The town hall was never built. It served as a Flak tower and Red Army listening post. The building has been abandoned since 1991.

In 1920 Heinersdorf became part of Greater Berlin. It was initially part of the Pankow borough. In 1986 it merged with Karow Blankenburg and Weissensee. After Berlin’s 2001 administrative reform these localities rejoined Pankow.

The Berlin-Pankow-Heinersdorf station opened in 1893. S-Bahn lines S2 and S8 serve it. Tram line M2 also connects Heinersdorf to the inner city.

Heinersdorf experienced media attention in 2008. The Khadija Mosque’s construction sparked controversy. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community built it.

Today Heinersdorf maintains its unique identity. It blends historical charm with modern life. As you explore Heinersdorf consider its layered past. From its medieval roots to its present-day community Heinersdorf remains a vital part of Berlin.
