“A church built by the townspeople themselves? You’re joking!” I hear you say. But it’s true! This is the Heilige Dreifaltigkeit, a testament to the faith and determination of the people of Bug. Imagine, back in the 19th century, Bug was a small village outside Bamberg. The only way for the villagers to attend church was a long, arduous journey to the Obere Pfarre in the city. This trek, often through muddy paths and treacherous hills, took its toll, especially during harsh weather. The villagers yearned for a place of worship closer to home. Finally, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They petitioned for permission to build a chapel, a request that was met with numerous obstacles. But the spirit of the villagers wouldn’t be deterred. They persevered, even holding outdoor services under a grand Linden tree to keep their faith alive. This very spot is now marked by a crucifixion group, reminding us of their unwavering devotion. Finally, in 1835, the much-awaited breakthrough arrived. Plans for the chapel, later to be known as the Heilige Dreifaltigkeit, were set in motion. The villagers themselves contributed a significant portion of the building costs, showcasing their commitment to the cause. The cornerstone was laid on September 7, 1837, marking a moment of triumph and anticipation. And so, on Trinity Sunday, June 10, 1838, the Heilige Dreifaltigkeit Church was inaugurated, a beacon of hope and faith built by the very hands of those it served.
