Have you ever wondered what a church built for a community that nearly didn’t exist would look like? Stand in front of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Frankfurt (Oder) and you’ll see a stunning example. This Catholic church, located just west of the Lennépark, stands as a testament to the ongoing resilience of the Catholic community in a traditionally Protestant city.

After the Reformation, the Catholic community in Frankfurt (Oder) began to slowly re-establish itself in the late 18th century. It wasn’t until 1776 that King Frederick II granted permission for the purchase of a building to serve as a chapel and school, marking the humble beginnings of the church.

Despite financial struggles, the community persevered by gradually transforming the modest space into a functioning church. The congregation grew steadily, and by the early 20th century, the need for a larger space became apparent.

The late 19th century saw plans for a new church set in motion, with architect Engelbert Seibertz commissioned to design the grand structure. Construction began in 1897, and the church was consecrated in 1899. It was a groundbreaking project, becoming the first public building in Frankfurt to be fully equipped with electric lighting.

The church’s design is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture, characterized by its soaring spire and intricate detailing. Inside the church, you’ll discover five altars, each a masterpiece by renowned artists of the time. The high altar, created by Carl Buhl, is particularly noteworthy and it depicts scenes from the life of Jesus in exquisite reliefs.

The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche stands not only as a place of worship, but also as a valuable piece of Frankfurt (Oder)’s history. Its majestic spire reaches towards the heavens, a symbol of hope and faith. It welcomes visitors into a sanctuary of peace, where the beauty of art and the warmth of community embrace all who enter.
