Did the slender, 49-meter tower of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche always look this way? No. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Vieselbach, a district of Erfurt, has seen centuries come and go. The original church, dating back to the Middle Ages, fell into disrepair by the late 19th century. The structure was deemed unsafe. The community decided a new building was needed. The old church was carefully dismantled, many of its stones repurposed for the construction of its successor. The tower, however, a testament to the past, remained. Its unique, slightly twisted design and octagonal, slate-covered top still reach for the sky, a landmark in Vieselbach. The new church building, completed in 1895, embraced the neogothic revival style, a popular architectural trend of the time. Imagine stepping inside during the church’s rededication on September 16th, 1895. The warm hues of the intricately carved wooden pews and galleries likely filled the space with a sense of grandeur. The ornate wooden ceiling, another masterpiece of craftsmanship, added to the church’s charm. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche isn’t just a beautiful building. It houses remarkable treasures. The vibrant stained-glass windows, created by master craftsman Wilhelm Franke of Naumburg in 1895, illuminate the altar area. The oldest piece in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche is the large bell, cast in 1522, possibly by Heinrich Ziegler, a renowned craftsman from Erfurt. This bell, with its intricate reliefs depicting the Annunciation and the Adoration of the Shepherds, has called generations to worship. A second bell, added in 1957, serves as a reminder of loss and renewal, its inscription speaking of a bell lost to war and reborn through sacrifice. The church also houses a Sauer-Walcker organ, a magnificent instrument installed in 1925. This organ, a gift from a local landowner in memory of his son lost in war, has miraculously retained its original romantic sound. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche stands as a symbol of community resilience, artistic skill, and the enduring power of faith. It is a place where the past whispers to the present, a testament to the people of Vieselbach’s dedication to preserving their heritage.
