Pause for a moment and let your gaze wander over the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. This church has a unique story. It is a tale of change and adaptation.

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche was designed by architect Siegfried Laessig. It was built in a modern style. The church was inaugurated in 1976. For decades, it served as a spiritual center for the local Evangelical Lutheran community.

Step inside and imagine the original design. A foyer led into an asymmetrically designed church hall. The ceiling varied in height creating different areas. Helmut Rogge crafted the altar, pulpit, and baptismal font from brass. Above the altar was a jagged sculpture symbolizing God’s cloak. Opposite the altar over the entrance, a sevenfold relief of tombac represented the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche also housed an impressive organ. It was built in 1979 by Gebrüder Hillebrand Orgelbau. The organ featured 16 registers across two manuals and a pedal.

However, times change. In 2016, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche gained historical monument status. Despite this recognition, the congregation dwindled. Eventually, it became clear that the building needed a new purpose.

In a significant turn of events, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche was deconsecrated on December 11, 2022. The Evangelical Lutheran congregation was dissolved in 2024. The church was sold to the Knabenchor Hannover, a renowned boys’ choir.

Imagine the sound of hymns and choral music filling this space. The Knabenchor Hannover had been searching for a new home. Their previous location in a school was no longer suitable. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche offered them about 1,000 square meters after renovations.

This transition ensures the Heilig-Geist-Kirche remains a place of spiritual significance. Instead of traditional sermons, the church now resonates with sacred music. The choir’s concerts provide a spiritual offering to the community.

The three bells cast by Rincker in 1976, will find a new home. They will be used by a congregation in Paistu, Estonia.

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche stands as a testament to transformation. It is a place where history, architecture, and music converge. It reminds us that even as times change, faith and community endure. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche preserves its spiritual essence through a new voice.
