“Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” These words greet you on the southwest gable of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. They are more than just an inscription. They are a testament to the enduring spirit of this church in Goerlitz.
The Heilig-Geist-Kirche isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and wood. A story of resilience faith and architectural beauty. It stands proudly on Sattigplatz a testament to its enduring legacy. This is the second Heilig-Geist-Kirche built on this site. The first one a Hospitalkirche stood near the Lausitzer Neiße river. Sadly it was demolished in 1905. Flooding and a planned bridge construction sealed its fate.
But the spirit of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche refused to be silenced. The congregation found a new home on Sattigplatz. The city of Goerlitz gave them land. It was a gesture of support a recognition of the church’s important role in the community.
The current Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a beautiful blend of styles. Its exterior boasts a neo-Romanesque architectural style. This speaks to the sturdy and enduring nature of faith. Inside however is a treasure trove of Baroque elements. These items were salvaged from the old church. The magnificent chancel altar the baptismal font the organ even the bell from 1772. They live on. They tell a silent story of continuity and survival.
Notice the ceiling. Its delicate Art Nouveau style. This intricate decoration contrasts with the heavier Romanesque lines of the building. The decorative beams are adorned with Bible verses. They whisper ancient wisdom to the attentive visitor.
