In the heart of Berlin, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle stands as a quiet witness to centuries of change. This red brick chapel, nestled within the bustling city, is the only surviving piece of the Heilig-Geist-Hospital, first mentioned in 1272. The hospital, originally tasked with caring for the city’s needy, stood near the Spandauer Tor. It provided shelter for orphans, the elderly, the infirm, and the sick. Imagine the countless lives that passed through these doors, seeking solace and care within its walls. The Heilig-Geist-Kapelle itself dates back to the late 13th century, though its story may reach even further. The granite base suggests the possibility of an earlier structure, perhaps incorporated into the present building after the devastating fire of 1380. This fire, which ravaged much of Berlin, may have led to the construction of the chapel we see today, sometime between 1380 and 1390. Look closely at the south facade of the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle. You can see a noticeable shift in the granite base, rising from three to seven rows of stone. This, along with a visible seam in the brickwork, further hints at the possibility of an earlier structure. Originally, the chapel boasted a wooden flat ceiling, adorned with painted patterns. Traces of this ceiling, hidden within the walls, reveal that even sections not meant to be seen were decorated. The walls themselves were once a vibrant red, overlaid with a white grid mimicking the brickwork, a striking contrast to the unadorned brick of the former vestibule. In 1476, the chapel underwent a significant transformation. The flat ceiling was replaced by the intricate star vaulting that graces the space today. Twelve terracotta consoles, depicting figures like the Evangelists, Apostles, and Christ, support the vaulting ribs. These figures, once brightly painted, now stand in their natural terracotta state, their original colors only visible in faint traces. The vaulted ceiling was originally a spectacle of color, with vibrant blue and red rays emanating from the keystones, interspersed with floral and leaf patterns. The Heilig-Geist-Kapelle has not remained untouched by time. Galleries were added in 1597 to accommodate a growing congregation, dramatically altering the interior space. The galleries remained until 1906, when the chapel was incorporated into the building of the Handelshochschule, the Berlin School of Economics. The chapel’s role shifted yet again, becoming a lecture hall. Even today, you can still access the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle through a small stone staircase, a reminder of the building’s layered past. Today, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle stands as a remarkable survivor, a testament to Berlin’s enduring spirit. From its humble beginnings as part of a hospital, to its transformation into a lecture hall, it continues to offer a glimpse into the city’s rich and complex history.
