A church born from rubble. That’s the story of Heilig Geist in Dortmund-Wellinghofen. Heilig Geist stands as a testament to the resilience of faith. It emerged from the ashes of World War II. The original church, a makeshift sanctuary in a converted hall, was bombed twice. Twice the congregation rebuilt it. They even shared the space with their Protestant neighbors when their churches were also destroyed. Heilig Geist’s story truly began much earlier, with whispers of a church in the 9th century. The Reformation silenced those whispers, moving the parish seat to Hörde. The Catholic presence rekindled in 1941 as a Pfarrvikarie. This small seed grew, gaining its own administration in 1957 and blossoming into a full Pfarrei in 1967. The current Heilig Geist building arose from the dedication of the community. The cornerstone was laid in 1955. Imagine the scene. The first shovels break ground. Excitement fills the air. The church, a beacon of hope, began to take shape. In 1956, the church was consecrated. The stained-glass windows, designed by Wilhelm Buschulte, cast vibrant colors across the newly finished walls. The altar, crafted from granite columns salvaged from the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Hörde, became a focal point. Later, a tabernacle, donated by Maria Wiederhold and created by artist Josef Amberg, added to the church’s beauty. The community continued to grow around Heilig Geist. A kindergarten opened its doors in 1967, followed by a community center in 1969. The church became a hub of activity. Heilig Geist even sits along the Camino de Santiago. Pilgrims can receive a stamp in their passports. They might even receive some refreshment. Today, Heilig Geist stands as more than just a building. It represents the unwavering spirit of a community. It’s a symbol of hope, rebuilt from destruction. It’s a place of welcome for travelers. It’s a vibrant part of Dortmund-Wellinghofen’s history and heart.
