Founded in 1869 the Heidelberger Kunstverein is a venerable institution. It’s dedicated to promoting and presenting contemporary art. It’s been a member of the Association of German Art Associations ADKV since 1910. Its current building a testament to Heidelberg’s artistic spirit sits proudly in the Old Town since 1990. It adjoins the Kurpfälzisches Museum.
The Heidelberger Kunstverein wasn’t always so established. Its beginnings were humble. In the late 1820s Germany saw the rise of citizen-founded art associations. Heidelberg’s followed in 1869. There was no independent museum in Heidelberg at that time. Artist Ludwig Horst is credited as the driving force. He tirelessly campaigned for its creation. He even wrote to the city requesting financial support. His argument was simple: the art association would enhance Heidelberg’s reputation a city then lacking its own dedicated art establishment.
The Heidelberger Kunstverein’s inaugural exhibition was held in 1869. The venue? Two empty rooms in the new Protestant school on Plöck. The exhibit showcased works by prominent artists of the time. The association’s initial 150 members contributed to acquiring artworks. These artworks were then raffled off annually. This was part of the early plan to create a permanent collection. The collection grew rapidly. It featured many artists from that very first exhibition.
The Heidelberger Kunstverein’s history is not without its challenges. Finding suitable permanent exhibition space proved difficult. It moved several times. Eventually in 1990 it got its current purpose-built building. The 500 square meters of exhibition space is a welcome contrast to its previous makeshift arrangements. This new building designed by architect Dieter Quast connects architecturally with the Kurpfälzisches Museum. The shared reception area underwent renovations in 2011.
Today the Heidelberger Kunstverein continues to thrive. It serves as a vital platform for contemporary art. It fosters a dialogue between art and society.
