Was it fate that transformed Heidelberg Castle into the romantic ruin we see today? Heidelberg Castle attracts around a million visitors every year. These impressive ruins have been synonymous with Romanticism since the early 19th century.

Let’s delve into the history of Heidelberg Castle. Its story is one of grandeur, destruction, and rebirth. Heidelberg Castle’s rich and eventful history began when the counts palatine of the Rhine established their residence at Heidelberg. First mentioned in 1225, it was destined to become one of the grandest castles of the Renaissance.

Imagine Heidelberg Castle boasting one of the most notable ensembles of buildings in the Holy Roman Empire. In brisk succession, the prince electors commissioned a series of imposing constructions. These were Gläserner Saalbau, Ottheinrichsbau, Friedrichsbau and Englischer Bau. Each one is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Their magnificent façades created a resplendent frame for the courtyard. Almost every prince-elector added a structure of a different style to Heidelberg Castle. In the 16th century, the medieval castle was expanded into a representative Renaissance castle. These structures are some of the best examples of German Renaissance architecture.

But Heidelberg Castle’s glory was not to last. In the late 17th century, the castle was repeatedly attacked and ultimately destroyed by the French in the War of the Grand Alliance. These catastrophic events are commemorated in a spectacular fireworks display, held several times each year.

In 1764, after some makeshift repairs, the battered Heidelberg Castle was heavily damaged again. This time, the forces of nature delivered two devastating lightning strikes. The once-proud residence caught fire and was left in ruins.

Consider that in 1537, a lightning bolt hit the complex and destroyed most of the upper castle. The chances of lightning striking and destroying the castle were incredibly small. When it did happen, many of the castle’s residents took it as a sign of impending tragedy. After successfully rebuilding parts of the ruins, tragedy struck not once, but twice more. Another strike of lightning set the castle into flames.

Despite the destruction, the 19th century brought a new wave of admiration. A sight both terrible and beautiful, the ruins epitomized the spirit of the Romantic movement. Heidelberg Castle was elevated to a national monument. The imposing edifice and its famous garden became shrouded in myth. The garden, the last work commissioned by the prince electors, was never completed. Some remaining landscaped terraces and other vestiges hint at the awe-inspiring scale of this ambitious project. In the 17th century, it was celebrated as the “eighth wonder of the world”.

Heidelberg Castle became a magnet for artists and writers. J.M.W. Turner, the English romantic painter, captured its beauty on canvas. Goethe and Victor Hugo waxed lyrical over its charms. Mark Twain, who spent the summer of 1878 in Heidelberg, wrote about the castle’s picturesque decay.

Though time has taken its toll, Heidelberg Castle’s fame lives on to this day. It stands as a testament to the power of history and the enduring allure of romantic ruins.

Remember, as you wander through the Heidelberg Castle, you’re walking through centuries of history. You are witnessing the legacy of princes, the impact of wars, and the beauty that can arise from destruction. Heidelberg Castle is more than just a ruin. It is a symbol of Heidelberg itself.
