Isn’t it calming how nature reclaims even the most solemn spaces? This is the Heidefriedhof. It is a municipal cemetery nestled in Berlin’s Mariendorf district. The Heidefriedhof offers a serene escape. Juniper and heather line its central axis. These plants give the Heidefriedhof its distinctive name.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the landscape. The Heidefriedhof spans 210,000 square meters. Bernhard Kynast designed this space in 1951. He created a landscape garden that offers peace.

The Heidefriedhof addresses a crucial need from the past. In the final months of World War II, Berlin’s inner-city cemeteries reached capacity. To prevent the spread of disease, emergency burial sites were established. The Heidefriedhof became the final resting place for many.

In March 1952, the garden authority reinterred bodies from temporary locations into individual graves here. Remains that could not be identified were placed in a communal grave. A 9.5-meter-high wooden cross marked this collective memorial. In 2002, the grave markers were updated to include the names of the dead. The large wooden cross was restored in the winter of 2016. From August to November 2017, the smaller wooden crosses were replaced with dark granite ones.

The Heidefriedhof offers various burial options today. These include ash scattering, earth burials without individual plots, and community earth graves. Traditional options are available. These include earth row and family plots. The Heidefriedhof also provides various urn interment choices. These range from simple placements to columbarium niches.

Many notable Berliners found their final resting place here. Otto Burgemeister rests here. He was a district mayor. Arthur Degner was also buried here. He was an East Prussian painter and art educator. Jürgen Fuchs, a critical writer from former East Germany, also lies here. These are only a few of the personalities buried here at the Heidefriedhof. Fritz Grantze was a politician. Franz Klühs was a resistance fighter against National Socialism. Willy Kreuer was the architect of the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek. Alfred Menger was a politician. Fritz Wiesener was the mayor of Berlin-Tempelhof. Dietmar Pertsch was a professor of literature.

In 2009, the Heidefriedhof was the main venue for Berlin’s Cemetery Day. This highlights its continuing importance. The Heidefriedhof is more than just a burial ground. It is a place of remembrance and respect. It serves as a green space for contemplation.
