What if these walls could talk? The Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen has seen a lot since its early days. It wasn’t always the Hebel-Gymnasium. The story begins in 1842 with the construction of this very building. Initially, it housed a Gewerbeschule, a vocational school, established in 1845. It also shared space with a höhere Bürgerschule, a type of secondary school, which unfortunately closed in 1853. The building then transitioned to an extended elementary school around 1860. In 1868, a new four-class höhere Bürgerschule was established. This marked a significant moment for the future Hebel-Gymnasium. However, the school wasn’t here on Goethestraße yet. It was located on Kleine Planken street, within the Friedrichschule building. The evolution continued with a shift to a six-class Realgymnasium in 1903. Then to a Realschule in 1904 located on Moltkestraße. In 1923 it transformed into an Oberrealschule and finally, in 1930, back to a Realgymnasium. It was then that the institution finally earned a name reflecting its future identity: the Hebelschule. The official name Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen was adopted in 1954, honoring Johann Peter Hebel, a poet. Hebel passed away in Schwetzingen. This connection to a local literary figure cemented the school’s place within the community. The Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen moved to its present location on Goethestraße in 1963, a new building started in 1961. This marked a new chapter for the school. The school embraced the changing times. In 2004, it adopted the eight-year Gymnasium (G8) system. Today, the Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen is a vibrant “open all-day school”. It offers educational and childcare programs for students on at least three weekdays, with a minimum of seven hours daily. The school offers various educational paths. Students can choose Latin or French as their second foreign language after English. There’s also a unique singing class for grades 5 to 7. Upon reaching the 8th grade, students can specialize. They can choose a language-focused track with Spanish as a third foreign language. Alternatively, there is a science-focused track with computer science, mathematics, and physics. The Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen is recognized as a MINT-friendly school, emphasizing science and technology. Since 2012, it’s been a “Courage School,” part of the “School without Racism – School with Courage” initiative. The Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen has an interesting connection to the cosmos. It collaborates with the Haus der Astronomie (House of Astronomy) in Heidelberg. A branch of the Schwetzingen city library has been housed within the school since 2009. This makes it a hub of learning and knowledge. The Hebel-Gymnasium Schwetzingen stands as a testament to the power of adaptation. It continues to evolve, meeting the needs of each generation of students.
