Before you stands Heavenbound Baptist Church. This church has a story of faith and community. It began modestly.
Lighthouse Baptist Church was the start. Pastor Gene Alderman started it in his home in 1987. The location was 315 Buckhalter Rd Savannah. The church then rented a building. It rented from Sanks Income Tax Service on Ogeechee Rd.
A significant change occurred in October 1988. Waters Avenue Baptist Church and Lighthouse Baptist Church joined together. They moved to Waters Avenue Baptist Church’s facilities.
In 1994 Waters Avenue Baptist Church made a pivotal decision. They voted to sell their facilities. They planned to relocate. In May 1994 the joint congregation bought a new place. This was at 1014 Quacco Road. With this move came a new identity. The church changed its name. It became Heavenbound Baptist Church. John Kirk Clinton was the first to join the newly named church. That was August 28 1994.
The congregation then undertook remodeling in 1996. Additions enhanced the church’s facilities. A fellowship building followed in September 2009. It was named after Pastor Alderman’s mother. The building was named Lela Marie Alderman.
After 30 years of service Pastor Alderman resigned in July 2017. His health was failing. The church called Martin Fuller in September 2017. Pastor Fuller’s first Sunday was October 1 2017. He is the current pastor.
