In 1906, a beacon of medical innovation rose in downtown San Diego: the Hearne Surgical Hospital. The Hearne Surgical Hospital, now the Ashforth Building, stands near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ash Street. A plaque marks it as Historical Site No. 115, a testament to its enduring legacy. Designed by the renowned Quayle Brothers, the same architects behind Balboa Stadium and the North Park Theatre, the Hearne Surgical Hospital was a marvel of its time. Dr. Joseph Carter Hearne, a prominent surgeon and the hospital’s founder, envisioned a facility that rivaled the best in the world. He achieved this and more. Historical accounts describe the Hearne Surgical Hospital as unparalleled in its equipment and appointments. Visiting surgeons from foreign battleships, accustomed to the finest medical facilities abroad, were reportedly astonished by its quality. It boasted accommodations for twenty-five patients, a significant capacity for the era. Originally built for Dr. Hearne’s private patients, the Hearne Surgical Hospital quickly became recognized for its excellence. Dr. Hearne himself was a leading figure in San Diego’s medical community. He served as the local surgeon for the Southern California railway and held the esteemed position of Regimental Surgeon and Major to the San Diego Regiment of Minute Men. He was even elected to the Board of Library Trustees, a testament to his community standing. While the Hearne Surgical Hospital no longer functions as a medical facility, its historical significance remains. Today, the building has been repurposed into apartments, offering modern living within the walls of a historical landmark. The Hearne Surgical Hospital stands as a reminder of Dr. Hearne’s vision and the Quayle Brothers’ architectural prowess, a lasting contribution to San Diego’s rich history.
