The Chamber of Horrors. That’s what they called it.
The Health and Physical Education Building. Now known as the Human Performance Center. It stands before you a testament to decades of athletic competition and university life. Built in 1969 this unassuming building has a surprisingly rich history.
For years it served as the home court for the New Orleans Privateers men’s and women’s basketball teams. Imagine the roar of the crowd. Over 4000 fans packed into the wooden bleachers. Their proximity to the court made for an intense atmosphere. A truly unforgettable experience. The building earned its nickname “Chamber of Horrors” because of this electric energy. The noise the close-quarters action.
The Privateers weren’t the only ones who called this arena home. The building hosted LHSAA state wrestling tournaments in 1975 and 1995. This versatile venue played host to many sporting events. It even temporarily housed the UNO basketball teams after Hurricane Katrina damaged Lakefront Arena.
The Human Performance Center’s story doesn’t end with basketball. Since 2008 it has been the home of the Big Easy Rollergirls. New Orleans’s own WFTDA flat track roller derby league. The building continues to evolve. In 2013 it underwent renovations. New facilities were added including a state of the art strength and conditioning center and an indoor golf practice facility.
Today the Human Performance Center is more than just an arena. It’s a symbol of resilience. A testament to the enduring spirit of New Orleans. It’s a place where athletes train. It’s a place where memories are made. It’s a place with a story worth telling. A story you’ve just experienced.
