Do you hear that faint whisper of history carried on the breeze? It dances through the trees of Headington Hill Park. This park, a green jewel on Headington Hill, offers a tranquil escape.

Headington Hill Park wasn’t always a public space. It was once part of the grand Headington Hill Hall estate. The Morrell family, Oxford brewers, owned this land.

James Morrell Snr purchased grazing land here in 1817. Later, his son James Morrell Jnr built the impressive Headington Hill Hall. This 51 room Italianate mansion included landscaped grounds. William Hart Baxter, curator of the Oxford Botanic Garden, designed the arboretum.

Imagine the Morrell family strolling through these very grounds. They admired the trees and ornamental shrubs. William Hart Baxter designed the landscaping in the 1850s.

The park’s history took a turn in 1953. James Morrell III sold the hall and gardens to Oxford City Council. Headington Hill Park opened to the public. Since then, it has been maintained partly as an arboretum. Many specimen trees from the original 19th-century arboretum still stand. These trees give the park its distinctive character.

Did you know there are around 1000 interesting trees here? The Friends of Headington Hill Park have even created a tree trail. It highlights the most interesting, old, and rare species.

Headington Hill Park connects to South Park via a wrought-iron footbridge. South Park was also owned by the Morrell family.

For a time, Headington Hill Hall even served as a military hospital during World War II. Later, Robert Maxwell leased the hall and restored it. Since 1992, Oxford Brookes University has leased Headington Hill Hall.

Headington Hill Park has hosted many outside events. Creation Theatre company performed Shakespeare plays here. Since 2012, it has been used for wedding receptions. Imagine celebrating your special day in this historic setting.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and nature. Headington Hill Park offers a serene retreat. It is also a reminder of the families and events that shaped Oxford. As you leave, carry with you a sense of the park’s past. Remember the whispers of the Morrells and the laughter of wedding celebrations.
