Hazel Park High School

Opened in 1961, Hazel Park High School has witnessed generations of Vikings walk its halls. This isn’t the original location though. The first Hazel Park High School opened in 1929 at the current site of the Junior High. Hazel Park High School isn’t just a place of education. It’s a cornerstone of this community, a symbol of resilience and pride. The school has even been recognized as a Reward School by the Michigan Department of Education. Imagine the students over the years, striving for academic excellence within these walls. Hazel Park High School has also fostered some incredible talent. Did you know that MLB pitcher Bob Welch, the 1990 AL Cy Young Award winner, walked these halls? He honed his skills, dreaming of baseball glory, right here at Hazel Park High. And he’s not the only notable alumnus. Olympic gold medalist wrestler Steve Fraser also started his journey here. From the wrestling mat to the Olympic podium, Fraser’s story is a testament to the dedication instilled at Hazel Park High. Author and playwright Frank Anthony Polito, another graduate, found his voice within these classrooms.
