Did you know that Hayvenhurst has a fascinating double life? Hayvenhurst isn’t just the Jackson family’s iconic home. It’s also the name of a luxurious estate built decades earlier. This magnificent mansion in the heart of Los Angeles tells a tale of two eras.

Let’s step back in time to 1909. A wealthy real estate entrepreneur William Hay and his wife Katherine embarked on a honeymoon cruise around the globe. They brought back exotic materials like Circassian walnut paneling. They planned to use these treasures in their dream house. They chose a lot in their new Crescent Heights development. Construction began in 1912. The newspaper reported twelve rooms and four bathrooms. The interior walls were hand-painted. A two-car garage even had rooms for staff.

But Hayvenhurst faced some challenges. Hay had trouble selling it after he built a larger house nearby. The Red Cross temporarily used it during wartime. This brings us to its second chapter.

In 1918 Alla Nazimova a famous actress found Hayvenhurst empty. The location was perfect for her. The West Coast studio was nearby. Downtown Hollywood was booming. Hayvenhurst’s beauty countered its remote location. The area was rustic. Poppy and bean fields surrounded it. A dirt road led to Laurel Canyon. Nazimova leased it immediately.

She invested heavily in improvements. She added a terrace an aviary a rose garden and many semitropical plants. She left the existing orange grove lily pond cedars and palms. By mid-December she was settled. She told a reporter she was tremendously happy in California. She loved her new home with a swimming pool five fireplaces chickens and mockingbirds. Hayvenhurst became the center of Hollywood life for a time.

Hayvenhurst’s legacy extends beyond Nazimova. It became the Jackson family’s home in 1971. Michael Jackson perfected his famous Moonwalk there. He recorded demos for iconic albums. The estate expanded with additions like a Snow White diorama a movie theater and a koi pond. It housed Bubbles Michael’s famous chimpanzee. The Jackson family remained at Hayvenhurst for many years.

Hayvenhurst is more than a house. It’s a living testament to Hollywood’s history. It’s a place where elegance and innovation have intertwined. It’s a window into the past and a symbol of enduring legacies. It reflects the dreams of those who made it their home.
