Did the honeycomb-like structure of Hawa Mahal ever catch your eye? Here before us stands Hawa Mahal, a remarkable palace in Jaipur, India, also known as the “Palace of Winds”. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, inspired by the Khetri Mahal, commissioned its construction in 1799. This five-story marvel, designed by Lal Chand Ustad, is constructed of red and pink sandstone. It’s an extension of Jaipur’s City Palace and connects to the Zenana, the women’s chambers. Hawa Mahal’s intricate facade features 953 small windows, or “jharokhas”. These windows allowed royal women to observe street life and festivals unseen. The latticework also creates a Venturi effect, drawing cool air through the palace. This clever design provided a welcome respite from Jaipur’s summer heat. It’s interesting to note that the view from the street, often mistaken for the front, is actually the back of Hawa Mahal. The interior, though less ornate than the facade, features chambers with pillars and corridors. You can imagine the royal ladies being carried up the ramps, as the top two floors are not accessible by stairs. Hawa Mahal underwent a significant renovation in 2006 to preserve its beauty and historical significance. It stands today as a testament to Rajput and Mughal architectural influences. It is a breathtaking example of the grandeur and ingenuity of India’s past.
