Lost in the vibrant tapestry of New Orleans stands Haven Methodist Church. Its story isn’t just etched in stone but woven into the very fabric of this city. Haven Methodist Church wasn’t always here. It began humbly in the 1870s. Methodist class and prayer meetings were held in homes. This was in East Providence. They were led by members of Hope Street Church in Providence. The first preaching service was a momentous occasion. It took place on June 13 1875 in Chedel Hall. A Sunday School with ten classes and seventy attendees was also formed. Rev Thomas Ely organized the church in October that same year. Sixteen members formed its core.

The church’s name itself holds a poignant history. Haven Methodist Episcopal Church was officially named in March 1880. This honored Bishop Gilbert Haven a radical egalitarian. His recent passing cemented the church’s name. A building was constructed at a cost of $3000. The land cost an additional $1200. Dedication services followed in April 1883. Bishop Simpson officiated.

Later a chapel was added. More land was purchased. Then in 1899 a new church was built. This replaced the original structure. The old building was even relocated and used as a mission hall. A devastating fire in 1929 destroyed the second church. Rising Sun Lodge of Masons generously provided temporary space. Their kindness helped Haven Methodist Church endure. A new building was erected and dedicated in 1931. This building stands to this day a testament to the church’s resilience and unwavering faith. Haven United Methodist celebrated its 145th anniversary in 2020. Its history is a journey of growth loss and rebirth. A true reflection of New Orleans’ own spirit. This church stands tall a symbol of faith hope and community in the heart of this dynamic city.
