Gazing up at the sky, one might ponder the evolution of flight. Here at the Ankara Aviation Museum, that story unfolds. This isn’t just a collection of aircraft. It is a testament to Turkish aviation history. The Ankara Aviation Museum stands as a beacon. It honors those who dared to dream of soaring through the heavens.
Established in 1998 by the Turkish Air Force, the Ankara Aviation Museum quickly became a national treasure. Sabiha Gökçen graced the opening. She was Atatürk’s adopted daughter and Turkey’s first female combat pilot. Her presence symbolized the spirit of innovation and courage that defines the museum.
Spanning over 64,000 square meters, the Ankara Aviation Museum displays a variety of aircraft. Step outside to see a collection of military marvels. Among these, you will see MIG series aircraft, each with its own story. Note the Shenyang J-6. It is a Chinese version of the MiG-19. The Pakistan Air Force donated it. Spot the PZL-Mielec Lim-6. This is a Polish variant of the MiG-17. The Bulgarian Air Force gifted it to the museum. A MIG-21MF is also present. It was a gift from the Hungarian Air Force and Pakistan Air Force.
Don’t miss the replica of the Blériot aircraft. Its name is Fethi Bey. The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation commissioned it. It was built in 2001 for the documentary “Golden Wings”.
Step inside the Ankara Aviation Museum to explore even more. Discover exhibits showcasing early Turkish aviation pioneers. Models depict the flight attempts of Lagâri Hasan Çelebi and Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi. These 17th-century Ottoman figures dared to defy gravity.
The Ankara Aviation Museum has mockups of aircraft. These were used by the Turkish Air Force since 1911. The “History of Aviation in Turkey and World” hall awaits. See half-size models of the first Turkish-made aircraft, Uğur and Pezetel. Discover mockups of air force weapon systems.
Pay your respects in the “Memories Hall”. The names of fallen personnel are listed here. Belongings of Cengiz Topel are displayed here. He was a pilot who died in the Cyprus Operation. Also on display are items belonging to Fesa Evrensev. He was the first Turkish Air Force pilot. A corner dedicated to Sabiha Gökçen showcases her belongings. These relate to her aviation career. She personally donated these items. Another corner honors Turkish female aviators.
Before you leave, visit the “Blue World”. Here, you can sit in the cockpits of a Lockheed T-33 and a Northrop F-5 aircraft. These were placed here in 1999.
