Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Delhi’s history, lies the Hauz Wali Masjid. It stands as a testament to a bygone era, a silent observer of centuries of change. The Hauz Wali Masjid is nestled within the Hauz Khas Complex. This complex is a historical treasure trove in South Delhi, housing a water tank, an Islamic seminary, a mosque, a tomb, and pavilions. The name “Hauz Khas” itself translates to “Royal Tank,” reflecting its regal origins. Hauz Wali Masjid and the surrounding complex were part of Siri, the second city of Delhi during the Delhi Sultanate. Alauddin Khilji initially commissioned the large water tank to supply water to Siri’s inhabitants. Later, Firuz Shah Tughlaq, known for his restoration efforts, revived the tank. He also constructed several buildings around it. These include the madrasa (Islamic school), a small mosque, his own tomb, and six domed pavilions. The madrasa at Hauz Wali Masjid was a renowned center of Islamic learning, even attracting scholars from Baghdad. Firuz Shah’s tomb, an austere structure, stands at the heart of the L-shaped madrasa. It’s a square chamber made of local quartzite rubble, with a white plaster finish. The Hauz Wali Masjid complex also features a small mosque. Its qibla projects towards the reservoir. The central mihrab, uniquely designed as a pavilion, extends into the reservoir. Over time, the area around Hauz Wali Masjid transformed into what is now known as Hauz Khas Village. This upscale area blends the old-world charm with modern boutiques and restaurants. The Hauz Khas complex has undergone restoration, including efforts to improve the water quality of the reservoir. Today, Hauz Wali Masjid continues to captivate visitors with its rich history and tranquil ambiance. The echoes of scholars and the whispers of royalty still linger, inviting us to explore the stories etched within its walls.
