Picture this. A grand estate in Schwerte Germany. This is Haus Villigst. More than just a building it whispers stories of centuries. It stands as a testament to history and transformation.

Haus Villigst began its life as a knight’s estate. Records suggest its existence as early as 1170. A knight Sobbo de Svirte lived there around 1300. The building then passed through various hands. For centuries it belonged to the Lords of Elverfeldt.

Ludwig Gisbert von Elverfeldt a significant figure in Haus Villigst’s history consolidated his family’s holdings. This included Haus Herbede Haus Blumenau Haus Berghofen and of course Haus Villigst. He rebuilt Haus Villigst in 1819. He chose the classicist style giving it the elegance we see today. His son Ludwig expanded the family estate further. He acquired Haus Ruhr and Haus Kotten adding to the family’s impressive land holdings.

Upon Ludwig’s death without children the entire estate including Haus Villigst passed to Viktor Freiherr von Rheinbaben. His daughter Elisabeth married Hans Dietrich Freiherr von Gemmingen-Steinegg. Haus Villigst became part of their family inheritance.

A significant shift occurred in 1948. The Evangelical Church of Westphalia leased Haus Villigst and its park. The surrounding farmland was already leased to local farmers. The forests remained under the family’s ownership. The church established the Evangelical Study Centre and the Evangelical Social Office here. The Pedagogical Institute of the EKvW was also added in 1953.

Today Haus Villigst stands as a vibrant center for education and community. It is home to several institutes and offices of the EKvW. These include the Institute for Church and Society the Office for Youth Work and the Institute for Continuing Education. Thousands of people come each year for seminars conferences and workshops. The history of Haus Villigst is woven into its walls. It is a place where the past and present meet in a unique and inspiring way.
