In the year 1260, amidst the fertile plains of Dortmund, rose a formidable structure known as Haus Mengede. This wasn’t just any house. It was a Rittergut, a knight’s estate, a symbol of power and prestige. Haus Mengede became the ancestral home of the Knights of Mengede, whose legacy would intertwine with the very fabric of this region. One of the most illustrious members of this noble family, Johann von Mengede, even rose to become the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in Livland from 1450 to 1465. The original Haus Mengede was a moated castle, complete with all the trappings of a medieval stronghold: a main castle, a fore-castle, and deep moats fed by the Emscher River. The river not only provided defense but also powered several mills vital to the local economy. The Knights of Strünkede also held significant portions of the estate, their influence woven into the story of Haus Mengede. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands, passing to the von Bodelschwingh family from 1421 to 1604, then to the von Büren family until 1715, and finally to the Droste zu Vischering family in 1765. Time, as it always does, marched relentlessly on, bringing both progress and destruction. In 1723, the fortifications of Haus Mengede were dismantled, a sign of changing times and military tactics. Then, in 1902, the Emscher River, once the lifeblood of the moats and mills, was rerouted and canalized. The moats were filled in, erasing a defining feature of Haus Mengede’s defenses. The ravages of World War II further weakened the structure. By 1968, Haus Mengede had deteriorated to such an extent that it was demolished, leaving only its foundations as a poignant reminder of its grandeur. Today, as you stand here, you can still trace the outline of the manor house within those remaining foundations. These remnants likely date back to a renovation in the mid-16th century, offering a glimpse into the evolution of this once-magnificent estate. An information board stands nearby, sharing the story of Haus Mengede with those who pause to listen. The site itself is registered as an archaeological monument, a testament to its enduring historical significance. Though the physical structure may be gone, the echoes of Haus Mengede’s story still resonate within these grounds.
